Whether you’re tending to an old or new scar, or just wondering what best practices you could adopt in your life to keep your skin healthy and vibrant, there are a number of different routines you should consider. No matter what skin type you have, a daily skincare routine can help you maintain overall skin health and improve imperfections such as acne, scarring, and dark spots. While there are a multitude of solutions out there, the most important aspect of your skin care routine is consistency. Even the best skin care products only work as good as your skin care routine.
Contrary to popular belief, washing your skin too much could be detrimental to your skin health. Sure, you’re left with that “squeaky clean” feeling, but you’re also stripping your skin of its natural oils. If you’re one to wash your face, try to keep this part of your routine at a twice a day maximum. You should also be sure to pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it, especially if it’s with a towel which can be abrasive. Another thing to consider is how your cleanser makes your skin feel after washing. You want to choose a cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin tight after washing.
Serums and solutions
If you want to use a vitamin C serum, it’s best to use in the morning because it helps protect against sun damage and collagen production. SPF 30 or higher (depending on your skin type) in addition to vitamin C will keep your skin safe from the sun’s harmful rays, and have you glowing. At night time, when your skin is more permeable (because it’s renewing itself), reparative ingredients like retinal or exfoliating acids are beneficial. Sometimes timing is everything, and adopting this practice will take your skin care routine to a whole new level.
All skin types need moisturizer– even oily skin. One thing to consider is that you should use a moisturizer that is lightweight, gel-based, and doesn’t block your pores (comedogenic). If your skin is on the dryer side, you’ll benefit more from cream-based moisturizers. When in doubt, look at the labeling. Most brands have “cream based’ or “gel based” front and center on their packaging.
Sunscreen is your friend
Even if it’s not really hot out, the sun is still reaching your skin. If you’re going to be outdoors for an extended period of time, it’s always a good practice to apply SPF 30 or higher 15 minutes before heading out. It might take a while for you to find the right sunscreen for you, but through reading the labels, and a little bit of trial and error, this line of defense works for everybody, and keeps your skin healthy.
Best practices for all skin types
Here are a couple more steps that everybody could throw into their routine that have tremendous results long-term.
- Stay hydrated
- 64 ounces of water a day will keep your skin hydrated. If you’re exerting yourself physically, you may need more. When in doubt, consult a medical professional.
- Change your pillowcases.
- The best practice is to change your pillowcase once a week. From dead hair and skin follicles, to pet dander, you’d be amazed what this one simple step will do for your skin health.
- Wash or wrap up hair before bed
- As we said earlier, your skin produces its own oil. While this is a good thing overall, your hair also produces its own oils. Cleaning, or putting up, your hair will keep excess hair oil from getting on your skin.
